Clear Skies in China!

Jadzia Daudel

Even though this time is very stressful for many of us, it’s important to always try your best to look on the positive side of things. Sometimes finding positives can be hard, but I found something that  really made me happy when I read about it. Pollution rates have been constantly rising in China, but because of corona-virus, pollution rates have been at an all time low! The act of quarantine has caused pollution rates to drop by aprx. 25%, and allowed for some of the first clear sky’s in years! The lack of pollution is also supposed to save thousands of lives in China!

Pollution in China is one of the leading causes of many health issues and premature deaths, however with the lack of production, there is much less pollutants in the air, which scientists expect to save thousands of lives. “It is an unprecedentedly dramatic drop in emissions,” says Lauri Myllyvirta, lead analyst at the Center for Research on Energy and Clean Air, who tallied the reductions. “I’ve definitely spoken to people in Shanghai who said that it’s been some of the most pristine blue skies that they remember over the winter.”…Air pollution is estimated to contribute to more than 1 million premature deaths in China each year. Fine particle pollution, also known as PM 2.5, can enter the bloodstream through the lungs and has been linked to asthma attacks, heart attacks and respiratory problems….”There is no question about it: When air quality improves, that will be associated with a reduction in health-related problems,” says Jim Zhang, professor of global and environmental health at Duke University.”

As you can see from reading the article excerp scientists have studied and come to an agreement that the lack of pollution will save lives. It just goes to show that there is always a positive side to things, and even though many lives have been lost due to corona-virus, it’s possible some may be saved from lack of pollution.

Something else that the lack of pollution has affected, is the sky. That may sound simple or childish, however people in Shanghai have reported the first clear sky’s in quite some time which is actually a pretty big deal because they rarely get to see clear skies! “With fewer factories running, cars and lorries on the roads, and planes in the air, the skies have become noticeably clearer. “Levels of nitrogen dioxide, a pollutant which comes primarily from the burning of fossil fuels, were down by as much as 30 percent, according to NASA.

NASA and European Space Agency pollution monitoring satellites issued two images which show a significant change in nitrogen dioxide levels in the air over the country between the start of the year and the end of February.” Sometimes something as simple as a clear sky can completely change one’s attitude and I think it’s just a reminder of how everything will clear up and blow over.

My point in writing this essay and telling you about some of the good things happening is just to give people a reminder to stay positive and try and keep a positive mindset. Although the coronavirus has had a lot of negative effects, especially in China, it is actually bringing some good. It just goes to show that even in some of the most negative situations, there is still some good that they bring. Try and look deeper and find the bright side of things. 🙂
